Barbara Milne (1956 – , Canadian)
Gift of Barbara Milne, Calgary, 2017
The “Portal” and “Still Life” series of collage works created by Barbara Milne, RCA furthers our knowledge of the life of Canadian artists, Peter Whyte (1905 – 1966) and Catharine Robb Whyte, OC (1906 – 1979). Important historical figures, Peter and Catharine Whyte founded the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Alberta. The “Portal” and “Still Life” series is closely associated with the Whytes as Milne reveals personal objects from the contents of their 1930s log residence, a registered historic resource. Milne recorded thousands of images of the house, its contents and surrounding landscape, and systematically selected a meaningful representation shown in both. These collages enhance our knowledge about the medium and subjects used by Milne and place them within the context of Canadian Art history. This donation complements and expands upon the work of other significant Canadian artists by addressing a geographic area, aesthetic appeal, artistic merit and educational opportunity.
