Born in India, W.H. McMahon moved to Canada in 1885, joining the North West Mounted Police in 1886 where he was posted first to Banff and later to Edmonton - during his service in Banff he served as a scout during the Red River Resistance (previously known as the Red River Rebellion). He purchased his discharge from Fort Saskatchewan in 1892 and remained in Edmonton with his wife and family until his death.
