Mary attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women from 1881-83 and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1883-85, where she met her husband, George Reid (Canadian). After honeymooning in Europe, the Reid’s settled in Toronto, where Mary went on to establish herself as a pre-eminent painter of floral still lifes. She was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1887 and in 1907 became the second woman to serve on its executive committee. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1893 and while she did teach, she is mostly known for her exhibited work. Her work was shown as a large retrospective at the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1922, the first woman to be featured in a solo exhibition.
