Cold Regions Warming

OCTOBER, 2022 – JANUARY, 2023

Cold Regions Warming is an interdisciplinary collaboration between artist Gennadiy Ivanov and Global Water Futures scientists Professors John Pomeroy and Trevor Davies. Paintings, drawings, and videos depict locations in Canada where global warming has impacted glaciers, oceans, lakes and rivers. Global Waters Futures is headquartered at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and aims to demonstrate global leadership in water science in colder regions. From a scientific base, the group also addresses the needs of the national economy in adapting to change and managing the risks of uncertain water futures and extreme events.  With the combination of scientific fact, and exquisite art, the exhibition is designed to inform on various levels of appreciation.

About the Artist:

Gennadiy Ivanov is a UK-based artist who has been working for more than 40 years. He graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from Norwich University, Vermont.

In 2019 he became an Artist in Residence at the University Saskatchewan, in 2021 he was awarded first place in the Norfolk Arts Awards, and he has been part of several projects and exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom and North America.

Gennady’s work includes a wide variety of media including painting, installation, drawing/sketching, and photography. Bringing these medias together in a provocative collision, Gennady mines a territory defined by not only the specters of recent geopolitical history, but also the deeply flowing social veins of underground style as manifested in the pop culture realms of street art fashion and experimental dance and music. His works address the acts of looking and seeing, and consider the way in which painting can stake a claim for itself amid the proliferation of contemporary visual formats. Elements of public activities such a walking, literature, music, history, mythology, philosophy and travel appear in this work as a way to make their elements accessible to a broad audience.
